ARTIST STATEMENT
My recent work is a culmination of my love for both portraiture and fiber. I create my portraits by needle felting layers of dyed wool onto felt or linen. Using my late grandmother’s quilting fabric, I add collage elements to complete the image. My work explores the juxtaposition of real/abstract, soft/hard, smoothness/texture, all while celebrating the beauty and diversity of the female face.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Marlo Berg was born and raised on the south side of Chicago in Calumet City. She now resides in Valparaiso, Indiana. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies and has been a licensed architect for sixteen years. After leaving her architectural practice 5 years ago to become a specialty contractor, she felt the void of the creative process. Marlo has always had a creative drive not only in her work, but also in her self taught hobbies. She has explored drawing, jewelry making, pottery, collage, and knitting over the years. In the past year, she has combined several of these passions into her needle felted portraits.
