My parents are a mathematician and a nuclear physicist, respectively. Growing up I was encouraged to investigate calculations and patterns, both numerical and natural. I find that letter-forms contain their own pattern not unlike the structure of a numerical equation. The discovery of each letter’s own system is what attracts me to this process. Removing the letter-forms from the context of legibility reveals their strength and structure. The irony of the work is that most viewers continue to try to “read” the work. Its non-readability is its message. Its legibility is in its form.
I work simultaneously on many pieces at once; these multiples transform from one series to the next. The work is rigorous in material and form. I work with dry transfer on Arches 140 hotpress. I am drawn to pattern, minutia, flow, rigidity, and chance. The work explores multi-level reading of visual composition.
