Tired Madonna
woven Epson prints
21.5 x 20.5 in.
The Christian Madonna symbolized boundless love for humanity. Her palms face upward toward the cosmos; her eyes are cast downward toward earthly concerns. She is veiled, partially concealed, untouchable and world-weary.
Typically, she is pictured as a youthful woman, but here, she is a hypostatization of paradoxical characteristics, youthfulness and age, spontaneity and wisdom, strength and vulnerability, attributes that all women embody at all stages of life.
Contextually, she is situated among cultural symbols, punctuation, letters, and vices. She is an urban manifestation, a billboard holy card for the twenty first century.
