Untitled I
sum-e ink on paper
7 x 10 in.

The Sum-e ink paintings are a meditation, a reflection of loss and an act of mourning. They address the extremes of darkness and light embodied by the human spirit. The process of making this work began last summer as the anniversary of the development and testing of the Trinity bomb was observed and continued through the sixtieth anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It will proceed until the paintings number one hundred in total. The use of sum-e ink and the concept of one hundred views are a reference to traditional methodologies of the Japanese culture.
