ARTIST STATEMENT
I am an eco-feminist artists who paints uplifting, positive images of the environment, women and women’s bodies. I paint out of my love of nature and women. My compassionate mission is to address one of the most urgent issues in the 21st century: The Triple Planetary Crisis (global warming, pollution, species loss), particularly as it impacts women and girls around the world. To do this, I uniquely create vibrantly colorful, acrylic fine art paints. I have my own special abstract approach to color, line, layering and expressive brushstrokes. The Female Symbol in my paintings emphasizes that the Climate Crisis is a global women’s issue. I use certified non-toxic, high-quality acrylic paints that are heavy-body, high-pigment loaded. I paint on durable acid-free, pure cotton duck canvas. All paintings are wired with easy-handling wire for immediate hanging and enjoyment. To be vibrantly healthy, women and girls need a vibrantly healthy planet. My three new series which address this include: “She Who….,” “Green Space Healing Space” and “Blue Space Healing Space. ” A feminist agenda is needed to tackle the world’s water crisis, says the UN. Recent research studies indicate the high importance of green and blue spaces to health, well-being and longevity. All women, including BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), need access to such spaces in nearby public parks, gardens, rivers, lakes, oceans and other nature areas. I wish to abstractly explore re-creating the upliftment and inspiration that I find in green and blue spaces.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Letitia L. Star is a Chicago eco-feminist artist and poet, as well as an environmental health journalist. She received her early art training at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her current artwork and poetry are informed by the many articles, including cover stories, she’s written on eco-friendly living for top consumer magazines.
