These gouache paintings examine the abstract patterns made by light in the darkness. I am especially drawn to the brief moment that occurs some evenings after the sun has set but before all the natural light leaves the sky. During this moment the sky turns amazing shades of blue, which provides an exquisite contrast for the warm yellows, golds and oranges produced by city lights. Because this moment is so brief, I work from photographs I take near my home in Chicago and during my travels. I crop these photographic images, balancing the abstract shapes with the more representational shapes.
