I Am One Of Them
felt, floral pins printed tags, string

As we grow we shed our skin and we remember, holding on to what we have necessarily outgrown. Living away from my home country for many years I have marked my change through places and times that have left impressions. Through this piece I examine the process of change that is born into all of us: an age old process from before earliest human memory when we shed our fur and separated ourselves from the other animals. Just as I can clearly remember the instances that caused me to stretch in my perceptions and move beyond my former selves, so too we can never forget our place in the animal kingdom. These seven mementos of growth (representing the seven emotional states in Chinese culture) are skins I have shed, marked with years and cities. They have evolved and moved me forward.
