ARTIST STATEMENT
At a Crossroad is a 3D photo collage representing the current and ongoing exchanges between ideas and demands of our society. It depicts social commentary regarding our nations homeless, immigration, LGBTQ+, BLM, gun violence, mental health and separation of church and state. The background is a compilation of sources headlines. The images are built up in varying heights, reaching out toward the viewer. America: The Throw Away Society
Ask any child what they want to be when they grow up. Not one will say, “When I grow up, I want to be homeless.” The Increasing coast of housing, inflation, catastrophic illness and domestic violence are just a few reasons more and more Americans are becoming displaced. Between 2023 and 2024 our homeless population increased 18%, to 778,480 persons. The fastest growing populations of homeless are children under the age of 18 and seniors ages 64+. (PIT 2024) This image was taken just off Skid Row in L.A. How is it that in the richest country on the planet an old man is reduced to using a garbage back in an effort to keep warm?
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Joanna Biondolillo is a film trained photographer whose career began in Austin, Texas. Her work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions around the country. Her documentary work has received numerous awards including: Best Social Commentary. Joanna is also a three-time competitor in the renowned ArtFields competition. She was inducted into the National Association of Women Artists, headquartered in New York in 2019. After spending more than two decades in fine art photography, capturing the beauty of the American landscape, she now works exclusively in the photo-documentary.
