ARTIST STATEMENT
As a foreigner living abroad, I question myself how I can be an adapter for living; under the current globalization, how I understand myself as a product to be inefficient and non-productive; in the cultural digesting process, how I resist the power and violence in a subtle way.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jia Jia is a multidisciplinary artist. She was born and raised in China. She works primarily in installation, and incorporating sculpture, video, and performance. Her practice uses satire and humor to imagine everyday objects anew. The work questions how globalization influences the ideology of the individual and how a foreign individual adapts the culture change filled with contradiction and stimulation.
Jia Jia earned her BFA in Ceramics from China Central Academy of Fine Arts and MFA in Sculpture from University of Washington. She was the recipient of Boyer and Elizabeth Bole Gonzales Scholarship and she is currently a member of SOIL Art Gallery. She has been an artist-in-residence in Chautauqua School of Art, NY; Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, NE and numerous places around US. Her work has been published in ArtConnect, ArtMaze Magazine and other publications.
