ARTIST STATEMENT
My subject matter derives from my need to connect with nature, which I believe to be a universal human necessity. I paint with an intentional and active mindfulness to allow the past and future to slip away. Many types of media are used to create the texture in my works, from clay to high gloss molding material, to the application of the paint itself. Viewers often speak of wanting to touch the paintings because of the variety of surfaces and the layers of glowing colors.
My application of paint with heavy hand stems from my studies at the University of California, Davis and my love of Bay Area Figurative painting. The energy applied in the painting process is meant to mirror the energy of the painting’s subject – for example – the energy of ocean, the energy of stream. With and without the figure present, the energy applied is very similar.
