ARTIST STATEMENT
Motherhood, family, and body acceptance, and reconnection with the natural world are the main themes of my work. I create images that empower people as they are in their bodies and lives, rather than an unattainable ideal. I carve and print each linoleum cut by hand to create affordable original artwork. These beautiful prints are created in a variety of colors and sizes and use handmade papers for a wide range of budgets.
I love using humor to evoke joy and encourage viewers to examine their preconceived ideas of the ideal human form. Life is meant to be joyful and our bodies are beautiful vehicles that allow us to experience it.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Janelle is an illustrator and printmaker with a BFA in illustration from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and a masters in Montessori Education. She was inspired to start making prints while pregnant with her daughter, pouring the care she felt into the work. As she has continued on her postpartum journey of motherhood, her work has delved into investigations of body representation and the intensity of the birthing experience. Each piece is meticulously planned, painstakingly carved and carefully inked and printed by hand.
