My usual art practice involves the use of bright colors, more often than not nonrepresentationally on textured surfaces. Many years ago, upon seeing a beautiful sunset in the Caribbean, I realized that my palette, which did not vary much, came from my love and appreciation for sunrises and sunsets, particularly over water. I experiment a lot with various surfaces, textures, and materials, as I find that these changes affect the presentation and feel of the color—and thus affect how the viewer responds to the work. I unapologetically admit that I do sometimes use them representationally when my spirit moves in that direction or I am moved by social justice issues.
