ARTIST STATEMENT
Sobremesa encapsulates the essence of cultural and familial connections through the lens of shared meals. This artwork intertwines the themes of migration, cultural assimilation, and the resilience of familial traditions embedded within food. Just as the exhibition delves into the multifaceted narratives of cultural heritage, Sobremesa portrays the significance of a communal dining experience that transcends mere sustenance. The home scene depicted in Sobremesa signifies the deeper connection established through the act of sharing a meal. Reflecting on my diverse upbringing across three different countries, this piece underscores the paramount cultural role of food as a unifying force. Beyond the flavors and aromas, the meal becomes a prolonged event, fostering a sense of togetherness that goes beyond the table.
Through this artwork, I emphasize the cultural significance of gathering with loved ones around a meal. These moments extend far beyond eating; they encapsulate the essence of unity, tradition, and cherished connections. The shared meal acts as a conduit for engaging dialogues, preserving and celebrating heritage, and strengthening familial bonds.
