“Dared to Be . . . a Silverpoint Soulful Experience” is a series of conceptual contemporary portraiture in silverpoint of BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) as their authentic selves. I have always been a woman steeped in Romanticism. The more than 500-year-old technique of silverpoint helps me marry the creative aesthetics of the Renaissance with the contemporary visions of Afro-Futurism. The aesthetics and technique are as unforgiving as the people that I chose to portray are unapologetic.
My intention is to show the unique beauty of the dark skin that we are born in. The darker the skin, the more resiliently and beautifully our flesh shines. The artwork in this project is created and displayed with reflected light. This means our presence is reflected positively, and the artwork captures light from the environment it is in.
The series title, “Dared to Be . . .,” is the prefix to the title of each piece of the series. I love to see the personal stories shining in silver before my eyes. It makes each individual unique and inspiring in character.
