ARTIST STATEMENT
In my work, I center the Black experience, exploring the ways in which the body exists in relation to the natural world. Symbiosis is a reflection of this ongoing inquiry—a visual meditation on the intimate relationship between human presence and the landscapes we inhabit. In a world that often views the Black body through a lens of labor or resistance, I turn toward something softer: a return to nature, to rest, to symbiotic existence. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how relentless the world feels—how political and social unrest demand constant attention. In that chaos, taking a moment to pause isn’t just necessary; it’s a way of resisting the pressure to always be in motion. Symbiosis captures that pause, a reminder that we don’t exist apart from nature but within it. The body, like the land, deserves care, time, and space to just be.
