ARTIST STATEMENT
Re:formation reflects my personal exploration of how we choose to perceive our bodies and experiences. These self-portraits are a process of stepping back and seeing myself from a new perspective, allowing me to reimagine curves and shapes. By placing a visual (and physical) barrier between my body and the camera, I explore the experience of detachment and reimagining. My approach symbolizes the internal filters we use, both consciously and unconsciously, to navigate our self-image. The mix of rough and smooth textures mirrors the fragmented realities marginalized communities face.
Distortion and selective focus is a commentary on societal tendencies to marginalize or overlook BIPOC identities and experiences, highlighting the contrasts between visibility and the obscured experiences that define systemic marginalization. The work is an invitation to examine how we form and reshape our identities and provide insight into the experiences of underrepresented voices.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Corinne Pompéy (b. Jan. 3, 2000) is a fine art photographer based in Chicago, IL. She holds a Bachelor of Art in Photography from Columbia College Chicago. Her work explores themes of identity, feminist issues, and body image, with a particular focus on the intersectionality of womanhood and the Black experience. Self-portraiture serves as a visual diary, reflecting both personal experiences and broader social narratives—key elements of her practice. This approach allows her to directly engage with the subjects she chooses to explore, using her own body and image as mediums for expression and examination. Through self-portraiture, Pompéy navigates the complexities of self-representation while addressing larger cultural issues. Pompey’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Science and Industry, Bridgeport Art Center, and EXPO Chicago (11th Edition).
