gouache on paper
9 x 10 in.
In representation, we create environments in which the ephemeral can remain. We write diaries, record videos, draw pictures, tell stories, all in an attempt to suspend time, to keep life from being forgotten, to fix it in a space we can understand and return to.
But every time we represent a thing, that thing is ripped from actuality and suspended in the space of representation. The actual is transformed by its new environment. In this transformation is a duality that my work inspects: the notion of representation as both an act of protection and of entrapment.
