My work is an intense collaboration with materials. I search for simple ways to give sculptural form to soft planar materials such as paper and fabric. In my latest work with tissue paper I am exploring the sewing techniques of making ruffles, gathers, and flounces. I’m interested in how these modes, usually associated with the decorative in women’s fashion, actually lend structure and strength to the form, a somewhat subversive notion. These pieces also comment on excess, as the material must be doubled, tripled, or quadrupled to create the desired fullness of form.
