Barbara Kay Herring

Chicago is home and provides much of my inspiration. EL tracks, old water tanks, back alleys and parking lots are all part of an urban landscape that inspire me. I am drawn to both the popular and less scenic areas of the city, attempting to capture the energy of the scene.

Since retiring from a ‘normal’ job, I have had to opportunity to do a bit of traveling. Again, the energy of a particular scene be it a barn or mountain will attract me. The work is to capture that energy with consideration to the composition and values. Using sketches, on-site paintings or photo references, the challenge is to produce a finished work that the viewer can relate to.
