ARTIST STATEMENT
Ashley Mangum’s work explores themes of spirituality, vulnerability, and fine art. Her featured pieces in this exhibition “Fiercely Soft” were specifically curated to showcase the authentic resilience and vulnerability black women symbolize. The title “Fiercely Soft” is to debunk the stereotype of how black women are perceived to be “strong” or always “angry”. This collection is a representation of the nurturing energy that black people possess.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ashley Mangum is a multidisciplinary artist from Jackson, Mississippi who works across photography, creative writing, and filmmaking. A former theatre enthusiast, Ashley’s background in performance informs her creative process, bringing a unique narrative quality to her visual and written work.
Ashley’s poetry book was featured in the “It Takes a Village” exhibition at the Mississippi Art Center, curated by Operation Shoestring, where her words connected deeply with audiences. Drawing from her diverse artistic practice, she continues to push boundaries by exploring new ways to blend storytelling, visual art, and personal history.
Currently, Ashley is focused on a spring magazine that highlights her evolving photography portfolio, as well as a documentary project centered on her family history, seeking to preserve and share intimate stories through film.
