ARTIST STATEMENT
This work is part of a series titled “HOMEBODY,” an earnest exploration and playful celebration of the human body. Within our cultural moment, the dominating rhetoric of the Body is one that assumes an inherent distinction and antagonism between the metaphysical “Self” and the biological form it takes. The supremacy of the Self is not a morally neutral mindset, but an active weapon against the enemy that is our Body, whose needs must be ignored, hidden, denied, and punished: to be controlled at all costs. Body policing works on both a systemic and deeply personal level, and our most vulnerable bodies are the first under attack. Assumed-Female bodies are both the most scrutinized and the most harshly penalized, and this is further compounded by layers of race, gender, and disability.
The Body becomes both the enemy and the battlefield. My work is in direct response to this rhetoric and how it has shaped my relationship with my own queer and disabled Body. By drawing inspiration from anatomical representations of human biology, I re-contextualize the space of the Body as a friendly and welcoming place to find rest and joy. This radical transformation is an act of individual self-care and an invitation to the viewer to find a similar comfort in the Body.
