ARTIST STATEMENT
All That Moves Is Alive is a collaborative effort between Magda Kubik and Anna Sahkul, delving into the intersections of oral storytelling, mythology, queerness, and image-making. We engage in intimate performances in response to prevailing cultural narratives of our time as well as ancient myths and fairy tales. Myths and fairy tales are deeply embedded in our cultural DNA, shaping our understanding of morality, the world, and individual possibilities.
Our artistic practice serves as a conduit for reimagining origin stories and embracing the inherent truths of community, intimacy, and play. Utilizing the medium format toy camera, the Holga, we access the spirit of play inherent in our artistic expression. Through a fluid exchange of roles— alternating between performer and director, poseur and voyeur—our contributions to the creation of an image become so intertwined that the hand pressing the shutter becomes irrelevant.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Anna Sahkul and Magda Kubik are Philadelphia-based artists who began their collaborative journey in 2022. Both artists honed their craft in photography, earning Bachelor’s of Science at Drexel University. It was there in the non-silver darkroom that they cultivated the roots of their creative partnership in alternative processes. Their artistic synergy blossomed further during a three-month residency at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughn, Ireland. Where they delved deeper into their practice, expanding and refining their artistic vision.
Anna and Magda have exhibited their works at various venues, including the Halide Project’s juried competition, ‘Living Image,’ in Philadelphia in 2023 and 2024, alongside a group showcase at HerSpace Gallery in 2023.
