ARTIST STATEMENT
This sculpture speaks to the power I have found within my own body. Growing up in the 1970’s, I, like many other children, were taught that speaking about our sexuality was taboo. I was also taught, as a young girl, about being submissive, compliant, and modest, all the while filling gender-specific stereotypes dictated by society. Upon reflection as an adult, I was conflicted with two seemingly opposing roles; that of mother/wife, and that of a sexual being with labels such as frigid and slut accompanying the judgements. Finally, after decades of discord, confusion, and sometimes shame, I have found power and confidence in my sexuality as well as a sense of peace and self-forgiveness.
