ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the parallels between land and human experience—both undergo cycles of change, destruction, and renewal. Maps attempt to define and control land through imposed borders, yet they fail to capture its fluid, ever-evolving nature, much like the unpredictability of personal and collective histories. In my process, I draw inspiration from map legends, forest fires, and animal markings, using mark-making techniques to reflect the shifting landscapes of both the earth and our lives. When creating these pieces, I considered how land, like people, moves through transitional and liminal states. It can be unknown and dangerous, but it also holds the potential for rebirth. Our experiences carve new paths, requiring us to navigate and define them for ourselves.
By engaging with environmental, social, and historical narratives, my work challenges the idea of fixed borders—both physical and conceptual—encouraging viewers to reconsider how we define space and belonging. Through this body of work, I aim to illuminate the provisional and the evolving, highlighting the deep connections between human stories and the land beneath us. Ultimately, I seek to challenge the ways in which we map, divide, and interpret the world around us, revealing the complexity that exists beyond imposed boundaries.
