ARTISTS STATEMENT
My work breathes life into body-sized sheets of paper in a baptism that transforms material into an embodiment of care and longing. I begin with a tight bundle of paper, carefully unwrapping it to avoid tears. Using the stillness of my body as a frame, I cast shrouds that become ephemeral figures—simultaneously heavy and weightless, fragile and resilient, hollow and filled with their own breath. These membranes also function as scrolls—tenderly unwrapped and preserved, they carry family histories, generational knowledge, and memories. They reflect the profound labor of caregiving, transcending the traditional role of motherhood. A mother need not have her own children to nurture others, whether by caring for step-children, tending to a parent at life’s end, or fostering continuity within a community. In this way, the figures serve as vessels of collective memory and resilience, honoring the quiet, enduring acts that bind generations together.
