ARTIST STATEMENT
As a child of the 1970s I remember cutting out paper dolls. There wasn’t a whole lot you could do with them, they were fragile. There are pieces of vintage baby cards, Planned Parenthood ephemera, measuring tape, playing cards, matchbook covers, postcards and more. These pieces were a joy to work on, I often make works that address equality and reproductive rights. I needed a break from being angry.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
I am a female equality activist, fiber artist and a suffrage era nerd. I have created shows that explore the suffragist era in the US, paid tribute to an assortment of women in U.S. history, and continue to explore the many different stereotypes that women navigate through on a daily basis. To honor the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment in 2020, I created a nationwide art and travel project called Her Flag. I collaborated with a woman artist in each of the 36 states that ratified the amendment into law to create a mammoth 18 x 26 foot flag, that has exhibited in Chicago at the Epiphany Center for The Arts, The Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, AR and The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C.
