ARTIST STATEMENT
To the Ojibwe people, manoomin — wild rice — is a gift from the Creator to be harvested, honored and shared as had been done for many generations. Wild rice has nourished Ojibwe, Menominee and many other nations both nutritionally and spiritually. Every feast at ceremony or a celebration or funeral includes manoomin that has been harvested and prepared according to long-time traditions. For the Native community living far away from wild rice beds, every significant event will include manoomin and everyone there will have at least a taste to acknowledge the time-honored process of bringing manoomin to the table and share with others in the continuity of earth’ gifts.
