ARTIST STATEMENT
Through vibrant colors, spontaneous brush strokes, and intriguing imagery, I use my art to tell stories. Whether it be a message that criticizes modern body standards and expectations, or whether it be a depiction of the extravagant Brazilian elite, the topics depicted in my paintings range from teenage activities to mental health issues to drug use. I draw inspiration from all sorts of places, mainly personal experiences, family members’ experiences, conversations with strangers, stories from books, music lyrics, etc. These are all places where I can uncover stories that aren’t widely acknowledged. I choose to depict stories that aren’t widely known or acknowledged so I can create a space for them to be talked about.
My goal with every piece is to create something that will keep the viewer engaged and curious about what they’re looking at. I strive to fill every artwork with meaning and depth so that the audience can piece together the message on their own without even having to read a description or an exhibition text.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
I’m 17 years old and I moved from Brazil to Chicago 2 years ago. I began taking art more seriously once I got access to the variety of materials and resources that the city has to offer. I deepened my knowledge and skill in art by exploring Chicago art museums, visiting galleries, and taking IB Visual Art (Higher Level) at my high school. I graduated with a 6 in that class which is equivalent to an A, my final project being my senior exhibition which was composed of 8 pieces that depicted the obscurities of femininity and life as a woman.
