ARTIST STATEMENT
Safe Space is an installation that invites you in. Viewers can touch the sculpture and wrap themselves within, changing the shadow impression created on the wall. The shapes the shadows create due to the fabric’s tension and the nature of the human body form a curved diamond silhouette. The cocoon-like shape is translated into most of my installations while being representative of femininity and womanhood.
This installation has gone on to become a multi-net series. Each weaving made from a constant stream of the threat to a woman’s right to choose, flooding my consciousness. Safe Space is contradictory. One can choose to envelop themselves in my net and feel safe, hidden from the world, or suffocated by the thing constricting them. Moreover, the participant can take a different path in experiencing this sculpture by spreading their arms wide to create a winged and empowering shadow impression.
As Roe has been overturned, taking away a person’s constitutional right to choose, we must respond as artists and allies.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Originally from New Jersey, Krista recently moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and is working as an MFA candidate at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She previously worked as an art educator and furniture refurbished but decided to pursue a master’s degree to expand her art practice.
Initially working in wood and resin, she moved into installation sculpture. Currently, the art focuses on historical women’s work such as weaving, inspiration from color, especially the high contrast found in charcoal drawings on white paper, and the ability for viewers to interact with the sculptures.
Often in her work, you can find a curved diamond shape, pointed at the top and bottom with rounded sides. This shape is reminiscent of feminine forms, such as the curvature of a woman’s body, and she finds it inherently feminine. Often this form is less intentional and more ideation of the subconscious. Krista uses personal insecurities and political issues as her vehicle to create.
