Playing the Deaf Card
wood, tarot cards, hearing aids, hearing aid batteries, dried lynx ears, leather, muskrat tails
3 x 6 x 5 in.

Not so long ago, mentioning my legal deafness or hearing impairment with the use of hearing aids was just a way to let others know that I was not stupid, ignoring them, a particularily spaced-out artist, or “on something”. Lately it has become so politically loaded, I find myself weighing the consequences before decideing whether to mention it or not, whether to “use” it or not. Playing the Deaf Card is an ironic commentary on my experiences and reflects my interest in exploring the intersections between nature and technology.
