This year, 2020, marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, asserting women’s right to vote. While this is a milestone worth acknowledging and much progress has been made in the fight for women’s equality in the intervening years, we are far from a level playing field. It is estimated that it will take an additional two hundred years to eliminate the gender pay gap. Reproductive rights are in jeopardy, maternal mortality is on the rise, and globally 75% of unpaid work is done by women.
The global pandemic has laid bare systemic inequalities, including the significant domestic burdens placed on women, forcing many to leave the workforce as they are unable to balance homeschooling, childcare, and careers.
