ARTIST STATEMENT
Since childhood, I have been passionate about color, design and composition. I am influenced by the art works I saw as a child at museums, art fairs and galleries, the natural world that I found in my backyard, and in the urban landscape of downtown Detroit.
My artistic studies have included a wide range of media including photography, watercolor, colored pencil, and collage, as well as historical fashion, and traditional textiles. My passion for fiber art began when I first chose to experiment with dyeing, altering and styling clothing ensembles to wear as part of my every day wardrobe in high school.
I eventually found, and fell in love with, costume design for live performance where I design, alter, stitch, dye, paint, and sculpt garments for characters and ensembles. I am drawn to bold colors and striking contrasts that draw your attention through shade, texture and tone.
My current textile creations are made from a collection of hand-dyed fabric scraps, and discarded threads amassed from many years of design projects. These small works are both collages and stories written in thread.
