The body of work, Congenital Grafts, is an attempt in my artwork to explore very specific issues of body that are rooted in my physical condition – arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. Congenital is a term that indicates from birth, and what I’ve experienced from birth are feelings of physical pain, trauma, frustration, exhilaration and patience. These feelings have produced this work. At times, the work allows an almost alarming view into physical features of this body. Most importantly, there is an emotional intimacy that places the viewer in my personal space, an invitation that at times is still uncomfortable. Nevertheless, it is empowering too, in lieu of a medical institution, create my own long-term examination of these issues.
