ARTISTS STATEMENT
Translucent Radiance is an ongoing series that explores the convergence of cutting-edge technology and traditional craftsmanship, inviting viewers to reimagine the interplay between the visible and the unseen. As visual and ceramic artists, we draw inspiration from nature’s Voronoi patterns, translating them into intricate 3D-printed resin frameworks through parametric modeling. These frameworks are paired with high-transparency handcrafted ceramic panels, combining engineering precision with the tactile warmth of human touch. At the heart of this series is the concept of “translucence,” symbolizing the ability to peer beyond surfaces to uncover hidden layers of meaning and structure. By manipulating light and shadow, each piece reveals a dynamic dialogue between internal and external spaces, evoking a sense of curiosity and discovery. The practice bridges innovation and tradition, reflecting a shared belief in the importance of balance—between technology and heritage, nature and design, craft and engineering. The integration of these seemingly disparate elements allows us to create works that not only highlight the beauty of materials and techniques but also inspire audiences to question their perception of boundaries and transparency. Through Translucent Radiance, the aim is to foster a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of disciplines and the poetic relationships that emerge when past and present converge. This series serves as both a celebration of craftsmanship and an exploration of how art can illuminate the unseen dimensions of our world.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Xena Zhang is an architect and cross-disciplinary visual artist based in Chicago, specializing in blending parametric design with traditional craftsmanship and ceramics. Her latest series, Translucent Radiance, features 3D-printed resin frameworks and high-transparency handcrafted ceramics, exploring the poetic interplay of light, shadow, and materiality. This work bridges advanced technology and artisanal techniques, offering viewers a deeper connection to the hidden layers of their surroundings. Born and raised in Beijing in a family of artists, Xena discovered her passion for creativity early on, drawing inspiration from her grandfather’s storytelling and her family’s artistic endeavors. Her journey began with painting and drawing in her childhood, evolving into a broader exploration of storytelling through space and design. After earning a bachelor’s degree in interior design, she pursued a master’s in architecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she expanded her practice to include ceramics, photography, and experimental design. Xena’s work reflects her interdisciplinary approach, combining precision with craftsmanship to create immersive, emotionally resonant spaces and installations. Her projects, including Translucent Radiance, highlight her commitment to pushing boundaries and harmonizing tradition with innovation. With a practice rooted in curiosity and storytelling, Xena continually explores how materials, techniques, and narratives intersect to shape meaningful experiences. Whether through architectural spaces, fine art installations, or experimental designs, Xena’s work seeks to inspire and connect, bridging the gap between art, technology, and human experience.
