ARTIST STATEMENT
My practice explores the ephemeral nature of memory and identity through fragility and transformation. I am driven by a desire to preserve fleeting moments, recognizing that memory is fluid, fragmented, and ever-shifting. This paradox shapes my use of materials, which serve as metaphors for memory’s impermanence and evolution. I navigate the tension between preservation and loss. My works often undergo a metamorphosis during creation, transitioning from pliable, moist states to structured, rigid forms. This material transformation mirrors the way memories evolve, shaped by perception and emotion. The vessel recurs as a central form in my practice – not only as a container but as a symbol of the human instinct to hold on to what is precious, even when it threatens to unravel. Ultimately, my practice honors the tension between holding on and letting go. Through sculpture, I seek to create spaces where viewers can engage with the temporality of memory, inviting contemplation and a deeper awareness of what remains after time passes.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Geornica Daniels is a sculptor and installation artist based in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Sculpture at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where she also teaches sculpture. Daniels’ practice investigates memory, identity, and the tension between preservation and loss through fragile, labor-intensive materials, including paper, rope, and found objects. The vessel recurs as a form in her work, functioning as both a literal container and a metaphor for the human impulse to hold and safeguard what is fleeting.
Her sculptures often undergo visible transformation during their making, shifting from pliable or unstable states into rigid, fixed forms that mirror the evolving nature of memory itself. Her work has been exhibited nationally and regionally, including at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Wright Museum of Art, Rahr-West Art Museum, Union Street Gallery, Overture Galleries, Var Gallery & Studios, and other venues. Her work has also been featured in Art Dose Magazine as an emerging artist to watch. She is scheduled to present a solo exhibition at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts in 2026. In addition to her studio practice, she has led multiple community workshops and received the AOP Fellowship for her artistic and educational contributions. Through sculpture and installation, Daniels creates spaces for reflection, inviting viewers to consider how memory is carried, altered, and sometimes undone by time.
