ARTIST STATEMENT
Amber Mustafic’s autobiographical embroideries center on her experiences of the Sublime and how it intersects with womanhood, sensuality, and connection to the natural world. Drawing on mythology, philosophy, and psychology, Mustafic’s richly detailed compositions depict ethereal dreamscapes where the physical and immaterial worlds exist on a single plane. The women in her embroideries are intimate representations of the artist and her loved ones, while also representing broader archetypes of the Divine Feminine. As a first-generation Albanian-American, Mustafic connects to her ancestral lineage not only through engaging with her maternal craft but also through her references to Albanian mythology. Albanian folk symbols of the sun, the ocean, and flowers are often presented in her narratives to symbolize concepts of ephemerality, infinite cycles, and overwhelming power. “Portal” offers a glimpse into the transcendental and sublime essence of relationships between women. Mustafic captures the transformative power of sisterhood, forged through mutual trust and a deep recognition of the inherent power within each individual. Here, two figures intertwine in a spiritual union, inhabiting a plane entirely their own. Through this connection, each character is profoundly and irrevocably changed, with a new world unlocked through their combined forces.
