Diversion
mixed, artist sculpted clay mask, found objects in wooden box

Using my hands to move the soft wet clay until it is gradually shaped into a recognizable face or figure is pure joy. My art is a process of discovering my connections. Inspirational sources reach back to my childhood growing up in Southwest Detroit. In spite of the lack of wealth the neighborhood was rich with characters and always with laughter.

Sculpting figuratively in clay today allows me to reclaim social lessons learned playing with dolls. My compulsion is to create tangible three dimensional objects that solicit interaction. My intention is to open a dialog that contributes to increased understanding of our shared human experience.
