ARTIST STATEMENT
Gimme a Head with Hair depicts my struggle with minor post-menopausal hair loss, and the relentless social media algorithms selling snake oil solutions. The work features textured Japanese wool yarn, hand-knit to mimic a full head of hair, interwoven with strands of silver. I modified a small loop knit stitch to create the representation of my hair mounted on a canvas. The amber cosmetic bottles and pump dispensers, filled with various substances (including rosemary from my garden), represent the treatments I’ve tried. Positioned in front, they become offerings to the fleeting days of youth.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Tammi Franke is a semi-retired attorney who began creating art in her 60’s. She is self-taught except for one correspondence art course in college and a few art classes in high school. She’s been to hundreds of art galleries and museums and is lucky to have had many creative friends over the years.
