ARTIST STATEMENT
“Her Spark” is a self portrait that reflects on my relationship towards American culture and the blind patriotism that is instilled into children. Celebrating a country with smoke bombs shaped like tanks, blaring fireworks, gun shaped explosives and fiery sparklers that captivated my attention without recognizing what my country actually stood for. Growing older, I could now see what is happening around me and the dread of “celebrating” that slowly crept in more and more each year. As this country politically deteriorates, celebrating it is something we don’t do as often. I’ve noticed even my neighborhood celebrate less and less. I am not patriotic but I still will light a sparkler on the 4th.
