For Shawn Marshall, painting is a practice; an outlet to release intuitive energy and let go of preconceived notions or self-imposed rules about how she interprets and portrays the world. Using palette knives, sharp edged tools, and brushes, she creates a three-dimensional surface on the canvas; always striving to create a balance between the layers of impasto and the underlying surface.

As a “Third Culture Kid”, she grew up overseas, lived in multiple countries, one of which was Beirut, Lebanon in the midst of the civil war in the 70’s. She saw violence and lived in fear. The one thing that appeared to remain peaceful was the landscape, specifically the horizon. The landscape is still and escape for her and her “practice” restorative.
