ARTIST STATEMENT
One of the most prominent and memorable sensations of my childhood experience was an early desire to take a picture every time I blinked. I spent these years covered in paint and clay but craved the instantaneous ability to capture photographically in the way I can today. I recently have become obsessed with images of my own childhood, holding them in my hands and re-experiencing mundanities that were previously blurred in my vault of memory.
My photobook “Old Cape Cod” explores the parallels between imagery of my childhood and images I have created as an adult, forming tactile manifestations of the parallels between these opposing life periods. “Old Cape Cod” pairs childhood images of myself taken by my family members on the beaches of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with images I have taken of those same family members on the same beaches in my adulthood. Various materials are printed on with the cyanotype process to simulate the same tactile creativity and imperfection I engulfed myself in while growing up. The individual images are scattered and arranged to be viewed as a one visual, lacking a narrative timeline and meshing into a single thought.
