ARTIST STATEMENT
Just as we must live in both the real world and in the world of our minds and imaginations my work weaves together what I see and what I imagine. Striving to find the link between the reality of nature and the outside world and my inner being drives my artistic vision. Woven throughout my work are glimpses of what I see and what I can imagine. The constant transformations that occur over the course of the creating a painting inspire me to constantly observe.
The use of encaustic wax in my art practice allows me to explore multiple layers of translucency. Materials such as thread often become part of the tapestry in the layers of wax. The transparent and translucent layers allow me to choose what I reveal or conceal. When I enter my studio, I weave what I have captured, glimpsed, or noticed from the corner of my eye. Building a visual tapestry by collecting a texture, a shape, a color, or a particularly nice line is a powerful tool in my art making. The evolutionary path I travel with each image is a unique perplexity. The revelations that are unveiled surprise and delight.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Robin VanHoozer is an artist, painter, and maker of unusual things. Residing in St. Joseph, Missouri and raised with a rich background in nature and history, her work displays a love of dynamic movement and vivid color. She received her BS in Art Education from Missouri Western State University and received her MA in Studio Art/Painting from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. Robin has exhibited locally throughout the Midwest as well as nationally in Chicago, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, and Washington, DC. Robin’s installation Echoes Through Time was the subject of a 2019 solo exhibit at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art. Fate, a collaboration project with artist Laurel DeFreece, is the subject of ongoing exhibits throughout the Midwest focusing on climate change. Recently, Robin’s work was included in the Connections exhibition, curated by Barbara O’Brien, at ARC Gallery in Chicago, IL.
