ARTIST STATEMENT
This piece explores transformation, aging, and the fragility of the human spirit through a garment that evolves from untouched white fabric to a charred final piece. Inspired by the slow melting of candles, I used materials that undergo physical and chemical change over time. Presented through a performance, the work captures the loss of innocence and the inevitability of change, revealing the beauty, complexity, and vulnerability of life itself.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
My name is Presley Baldwin, and I’m a rising senior studying Fashion Design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Originally from Dallas, Texas, I moved to Chicago to pursue my education and expand my creative practice. My work has been featured in sustainable fashion events such as Blue Paradox Runway Show and Fashion Night Out with The Curio. Over the past two years, I’ve been honored with the Leora Pogue and Perry Ellis Scholarships in recognition of my work. I’m committed to sustainability, often sourcing secondhand or natural fiber materials to create garments that are both environmentally conscious and enduring . My designs explore personal transformation, using fashion as a way to reflect the changes we experience throughout life.
