This work is from my “Hustle and Flow “series which represents the struggle to survive on a day to day basis. It adapts perfectly with a “State of Race” theme. The colors intermingle and fight for their own space within the painting much like the middle class striving to hold on to their way of life. The election of an African American President is a strong indication of progress toward race relations but it doesn’t seem to tip the scale as strongly toward equality. Inequality based on race will continue to be an issue for years to come. Over time the intermixing of the races is going to cause some prejudices to diminish, moving us closer to a STATE OF GRACE.” Pearlie Taylor is the daughter of a sharecropping family who migrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1945 from her birthplace of Vance, Mississippi. She has studied at The American Academy of Art in Chicago and the South Side Community Art Center. She was selected as the featured artist for the 2012 Chicago Jazz Festival and in 2008 one of her paintings was recognized with a 3rd place ribbon by The Museum of Science and Industry’s Black Creativity Exhibit. Pearlie’s art exhibitions include the DuSable Museum, Highland Park Arts Center, Highland Park, IL, University of Illinois at Chicago, National Black Fine Arts Show in New York, Chicago Jazz Festival, Macy’s, and Chicago, Illinois.
