ARTIST STATEMENT
I create textile collages that explore people, place, memory, and moments of human connection. Using fabric, photographs, color, pattern, and texture, I layer and transform images to capture the beauty, mystery, resilience, and joy I find in the world around me. My hope is that each piece invites the viewer to pause, look closely, and see something they might otherwise have missed.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Paulette Schermerhorn is a textile and fabric collage artist based in Hurricane, Utah. Her work grew from a lifelong love of travel, photography, people, and the stories found in places both familiar and far from home. She often begins with photographs she has taken herself, transforming them through fabric, color, pattern, and texture into richly layered textile collages.
Schermerhorn has studied fabric collage with artists Sue Benner and Susan Carlson and is a member of the Southern Utah Fiber Arts Group. Her work has received numerous awards, including the Anita Moore Gander Award for Best Textile Art at the 2024 Utah Women Artists Exhibition.
In 2026, her work Proud Mercy received First Place in the National Veterans Creative Arts Competition after advancing from the Salt Lake City VA local competition to national judging. Her art reflects her curiosity about the world and her desire to capture its beauty, resilience, mystery, and humanity.
