ARTIST STATEMENT
My art addresses issues of social, cultural, and political gravity. Using familiar imagery, I offer my views on momentous historical and cultural events. When creating social commentary art, I identify as a “Visual Essayist”.
My process is unique to the piece, from hand-dyed paper, silks, and dimensional complements to unusual wall presentations and floor installations. The art of stitchery both unites my process and underscores the art form’s feminine historical significance.
Disrupting complacency, encouraging dialogue, and provoking the viewer to examine issues that affect us all, this act of creating helps me release my frustration with the thorny, complex ailments of our age. When creating art that challenges the viewer, I identify as an “Art Activist”.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anderson-Turner exhibits her social commentary art internationally in Italy, Turkey, Poland, India, Ecuador, and New Macedonia as well as nationally from coast to coast. Her work is featured in the permanent collections of the Museum of Michigan State University and the Reece Museum in Tennessee, as well as Florida University and Human Rights collections. She has been featured in scholarly publications such as Quilts and Human Rights. A member of the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) for seven years, Anderson-Turner has won major awards, including NAWA’s First Place and Best in Show Awards. She is an artist for OppArt, which provides art for The Nation magazine. Anderson-Turner creates work that highlights thorny issues of our past and our present, her focus is on sharing her art through exhibition.
