ARTIST STATEMENT
Working with a variety of clandestine and curated papers and images, Nellie’s collage works are layered with an applique effect to “set the stage” and tell a story. Current works touch on themes of the perceived innocence of child’s play and grief as an expression of love.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Raised in idyllic rural Kentucky, Nellie’s ceramicist father and art quilter mother instilled a love for crafted forms and expressions in texture, color and pattern. In an attempt to be practical within the arts, Nellie studied theater scenic design at DePaul University and then promptly moved on to other things. While always dabbling in various textile arts, painting and mosaics, Nellie has landed on collage as the best medium for it’s combinations of clandestine and careful curation as well as intricate manipulations of tiny bits in pleasing ways to set the stage and tell a story.
