ARTIST STATEMENT
My work collaborates with beauty, humor, and pain to investigate the effectiveness of art in exploring childhood trauma by drawing on concepts from art therapy. My practice is led by the exploration of my entomophobia and the intrapersonal relationship with my sexuality as a Latina woman. The intimate and repetitive fiber-based techniques of my process suit the investigation of my dreams, memories, and lived experiences, forcing me to sit with them for prolonged moments. Equally, exploring nostalgic concepts of home, family, and my Colombian culture are essential to my world building.
Having strong emotional responses to the tactility of the materials I work with make them comforting vehicles that allow me to confront my traumatic experiences and the conflicts I endure with my physical self. The presence of my body serves as a base for me to investigate my identity. My work engages with monumentality and feminist craft as contemporary art by taking up space through femininity, while redefining my own aesthetic aims through physicality.
