ABOUT THE ARTIST
Maura Benson is a multidisciplinary artist residing in St. Louis, Missouri. Graduating from Webster University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a photography emphasis, she works in various mediums ranging from video and time-based art to printmaking and various photography methods.
With a focus on human experience, particularly as a survivor of abuse and sexual assault, many of her works are visceral in nature as a means of both self-expression and universal experiences of those unfortunate enough to have similar backgrounds. While her work may be uncomfortable, and at times grotesque and disturbing, it is not only reflective of her personal trauma, but also the common feelings felt by other survivors.
Not all of Benson’s works are about her experience as a survivor. As a femme lesbian, Benson also creates work celebrating queer joy in her local community and the identities she’s been lucky to experience through it in her hometown of St. Louis.
