ARTIST STATEMENT
This recent series of embroidered Cabinet Cards evolved from the 2024 election results and the ensuing attack on women’s rights through rollbacks at the state and federal levels. On top of that, the investigation into the Epstein files revealed a blatant disregard for young women who were seduced, blackmailed and kidnapped for serial human trafficking. This particular piece shows a young woman on the brink of womanhood who may marry and become a non-entity. Her future husband will have all legal rights over her including her reproductive rights. This image serves as a reminder that “I am Human “, not an object. How far have we come when women are still treated as sexual objects in our time?
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Maryann Riker is a mixed-media artist whose collages and artist books convey a visual narrative relating to women’s historical roles and societal issues such as the environment and the politics of gender.
Her work is included in many private and public collections such as Lafayette College, the Newark Art Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art Feminist Art Institute and Rhode Island School of Design. She exhibits throughout the United States especially supporting exhibits centered on women’s issues.
